Reality Does Bite

Reality Bites was a movie in the 90's that I remembered loving as a teenager but when I watched it in my 20's it took on a whole new meaning. This is one of my favorite quotes from the movie;

Lelaina (Winona Ryder): "I just don’t understand why things just can’t go back to normal at the end of the half hour like on the Brady Bunch or something."

Troy (Ethan Hawke): "Well, ‘cause Mr. Brady died of AIDS. Things don’t turn out like that."

Nothing is perfect and nobody is perfect which leads me to another one of my favorite lines;

Troy: "There's no point to any of this. It's all just a... a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes."

Oh it is much more than that. I was 28 when my beloved father dropped dead. I did not have a chance to say good bye. Ten days later I was holding a new baby. I had endless gifts of happyness the wonder of seeing him in my treasured children - I saw them have children and grandchildren and I saw the echo of that wonderful man in many of them. Treasure your talents and the gifts of nature that bring health and strength and love each day. If tears and sobs break through give them a moment and then forcefully distract yourself - go out and plant a row of peas. Watch the birds dig them up moments later but some will grow. And think about all the wonderful moments that lie ahead for you. Remember the one you love and lost is in you and will be in your children. Besides would he want you to be shattered with sadness. I think not.
